The Backyard Birder, an independent business that has been a mainstay in Newmarket since 1998, is owned and operated by James Elliott, an avid amateur naturalist. A wide variety of bird and nature related products are available.
Wild Bird Feed Only the freshest feed is sold at The Backyard Birder. We buy our feed from Mill Creek Seed Company which is located in Newmarket. The feed is blended fresh every day and delivered twice weekly to our premises. A wide variety of premium suet is always available. No matter what kind of bird you want to attract, you’ll find the feed at the Backyard Birder. Feeders and Houses At The Backyard Birder the emphasis is on promoting local crafters. Most of the birdhouses and feeders sold are designed and produced in the area. There are rustic feeders and houses from Newmarket, squirrel-proof feeders from Quebec, hopper feeders from Fenelon Falls and numerous tube feeders designed in Newmarket. Gifts We offer a variety of nature related gifts Here you will find Field Guides for everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans of the bird watching world. To compliment the field guides there are binoculars for most levels of birdwatcher. And what outdoor kit would be complete without a Swiss Army Knife? The Backyard Birder carries Bushnell and Alpen binoculars as well as Wenger Swiss Army Knives. These are just a few of the nature related gifts we carry. We have the Muskoka Set of etched wine and/or beer glassware, Canadian stained glass and carved wooden bird sculptures. Come in and browse. Art The Backyard Birder is home to a number of Newmarket’s artists work. Here you will find original paintings and limited edition prints by wildlife artist Nigel Shaw. You can find paintings and driftwood sculpture by Steve Brown, another local artist. We also have framed photographs by local photographer John Nagy and photo-cards by George Boyer. All the art is for sale to a good home. Getting Outside Bird watching is not just sitting at home watching the birds at the feeder, though that is an important aspect. At The Backyard Birder we encourage people to get out into nature. A Final Word In the following pages we have tried to put everything in its place, but there are some things that we carry that defy classification. Do you classify walking sticks as gifts or art? They're both, but how would you classify that in a Birding store? And since each one is unique, you can't show a photo of a typical one. So, while this site does and admirable job of giving you a sample of what The Backyard Birder has to offer, it is only that - a sample. Bearing that in mind I encourage you to come in, browse, and see it all firsthand.
